There are so many cruise options now in Halong Bay- what is it that makes this one so different?

I’ve never eaten Vietnamese food before and I’m worried I won’t like it- will that be a problem?

Vietnamese food, particularly in the North, is actually easy to eat for most people, as it isn’t too spicy or too sweet like some other Vietnamese cuisines or Asian dishes for that matter.

Is there anything special I need to pack?

Whenever travelling in Halong bay, it is highly advised to carry with you a sun cream, a mosquito repellent, wet serviettes/baby wipes and/or hand sanitizers, aspirin/paracetamol, stomach troubles medicines, and windbreakers just in case the weather doesn't cooperate.

Do I need to bring money?

Yes, you should bring money for refreshments and souvenirs off the boat and for tips and gratuities.

What should I wear on the boat?

No dress code is imposed onboard La Vela Cruises. We advise you to take light garments in summer, sweaters and/or a jacket in winters as it can get pretty chilly, especially at night. A raincoat will be useful any time of the year.

If you intend to do kayaking, plan to have a change of clothes as you will easily get wet.
As for shoes, choose what is appropriate according to the temperatures and bring along trainers or walking shoes for the excursions (visiting caves, hiking, cycling, etc.).
Don’t forget your bathing suit!

Is Wifi available onboard?

Free Wifi is available onboard but is subject to 3G network coverage. Please be warned that internet connection in Halong Bay can be very difficult as the area is surrounded by large karst mountains and can easily block the signals coming from the satellites.

Will I get seasick?

There are thousands of islands in Halong Bay, which ensures that the waters remain calm, much like the water in a lake. Even the most sensitive people very rarely suffer from seasickness, but it is wise to take seasickness tablets with you just in case.

I’ve already been to Halong Bay. Will I still enjoy this program?

Any trip to Halong bay is something special and memorable so of course! The difference here is that you will be on one of the smallest vessels in Halong, which is an intimate experience in itself.

How long does it take from Hanoi to Halong Bay?

The trip from Hanoi to Halong Bay usually takes about 3-4 hours depending on the traffic. Although it may seem closer on Google Maps, there are strict traffic regulations that our drivers must follow whilst driving to Halong Bay. It is advised for our guests to bring some snacks and some reading materials for the long ride. Otherwise, guests can just enjoy using their mobile devices as all shuttle transfers are equipped with Wi-Fi.

Why do we need to stop in between Hanoi and Halong Bay?

All shuttle transfers to Halong Bay need to stop in between for about 20-30 minutes so that drivers could take a rest before continuing the journey. Once they reach the destination, they would have to drive back again to Hanoi for another 3-4 hours with the guests who’ve just finished the cruises. This break in between is also a rule implemented by the local authorities for the well-being of all the drivers.
